Industries

Telecommunications

Pelagian’s founders have contributed to the success of the submarine telecoms sector for over 25 years.

We have a long track record of involvement with the industry, having been employed by the major cable manufacturers and associated companies in the fields of marine survey and cable installation. We maintain those close working relationships today, providing our experience and knowledge across a wide range of engineering disciplines.

Renewable Energy

Pelagian has operated in the offshore renewable energy sector for over 10 years.

We have been working at the forefront of this new and challenging offshore industry, providing our experience and knowledge for the safe design and construction of offshore wind farm array and export power cables.

Utilities

Pelagian’s consultants have worked in the offshore power cable sector for over 10 years.

Our consultants understand the complexities of building offshore power cable interconnectors and have successfully applied that specialist knowledge to the largest and most complex power cable projects.

Offshore Oil & Gas

Pelagian’s consultants have worked in the offshore oil and gas sector for over 25 years.

Our consultants started their careers in offshore oil and gas. We have followed the recent trends in platform connectivity using fibre optic and power cables. We have provided expertise from cable risk assessment and planning to cable protection and burial in close proximity to fixed seabed structures.

Survey & Geoscience

Pelagian’s consultants have worked in the offshore survey sector for over 25 years.

Our consultants are dedicated surveyors, geophysicists and engineers with many years of offshore survey experience providing the vital interface between data acquisition and system design. Pelagian provides its customers with a full survey solution using well established strategic partnerships with a number of the world’s survey companies.

Geophysical Survey Expertise

Pelagian’s team includes dedicated surveyors, geophysicists and engineers with many years of offshore expertise in operating high resolution survey equipment including GPS navigation, multibeam echo sounders, sidescan sonar, shallow seismic profiling, acoustic positioning, sediment sampling, drilling and CPT measurement; all valuable tools for the assessment of the marine environment for a submarine cable.
Pelagian has worked closely with both cable owners and installers and offshore survey companies to advise on the specifications and requirements for geophysical surveys, to inform the design process on seabed hazards, potential UXO risk and environmental sensitivity. Pelagian provides its customers with a full survey solution, using well established strategic partnerships with a number of the world’s specialist survey companies.
Pelagian conducts its own survey programs and has well established annual contracts for depth of burial surveys in Europe. Our consultants advise the customer on any significant changes in depth of cover over their cable assets and then work closely with our installation experts devise mitigation strategies to ensure that seabed cable is adequately protected from external hazards.

Subsea Cable Planning

Pelagian is an experienced user of the industry standard MakaiPlan cable engineering software and has been using the software for over 10 years. We have supported Makai Ocean Engineering in the continuing development of the software, helping to improve the interface and cater for the needs of new business areas.
MakaiPlan is Pelagian’s primary tool for the detailed design of submarine cables using a Geographical Information System (GIS) map based interface. This interface is used to access thematic databases such as geophysical survey data and existing seabed features allowing the route engineer to precisely model the cable route and modify its interaction with both natural and manmade seabed hazards.
The cable routes may change a number of times during the project lifecycle, each change reflecting the incorporation of new data to enhance the design process. The output of this map based engineering process is then used to quantify a variety of business decisions from initial design studies, through procurement and cable manufacturing to hazard surveys and cable installation.

Geospatial Data Management

Pelagian offers comprehensive expertise in the management of geospatial data for subsea cable projects. Our expertise lays in the active management the diverse datasets coming from various parts of the project workflow. This includes the initial infrastructure designs, geophysical surveys and construction data.
A challenge of large multiyear projects is to ensure that the data being used is up to date, relevant and can be easily shared amongst the various companies involved in the design and construction process. Using ARCGIS and CAD based software, Pelagian’s consultants consider the project as a series of discreet datasets and apply rigorous quality controls to each dataset.
This data can then be presented in a variety of electronic formats, from desk top based map viewers to detailed engineering drawings and working charts, tailored to the end user and quality controlled to ensure that the information is valid for its intended purpose.

Government

Pelagian’s consultants have contributed to raising subsea cable awareness and promoting industry best practice for over 10 years.

Providing technical leadership and expertise with Subsea Cables UK, Pelagian promotes marine safety and the interests of the subsea cable industry to key government decision makers.
