With over 25 years of industry experience, our consultants can contribute to every aspect of your engineering project; providing the relevant technical and commercial knowledge every step of the way.
Cable Route Engineering
Pelagian’s route engineers can call on over 25 years of experience in the successful design, planning, survey and installation of submarine cables. This expertise has been gained on a variety of projects in telecoms, renewable energy, oil and gas and offshore power; from small domestic cables, through to large transoceanic and multi country network systems.
Cable Route Studies
Pelagian’s cable route studies provide a valuable desk top resource for the planning and route selection of submarine cable systems. They provide an assessment of both natural and manmade hazards and also information on the regulatory and environmental requirements for the cable route.
Information is obtained from a variety of in-house and commercially available databases, academic papers and industry guidelines. Data includes seabed bathymetry, seafloor sediment mapping, meteorology, ocean currents and tides and fishing, shipping and the activities of other seabed users.
As part of the cable route study Pelagian undertakes site visits to investigate suitable beach landings, location of terrestrial infrastructure and the proximity of existing cable landing stations and facilitates meetings with regulatory, environmental and commercial interests.
Risk Management and GAP Analysis
Pelagian are leading industry experts in subsea cables, supplying a comprehensive risk management approach to cable projects at all stages of the life cycle. This risk management of subsea cable engineering encompasses a technical and commercial review of the project as a means of classifying how well a product, dataset or solution meets the needs of the project.
The GAP Analysis is used to highlight areas of deficiency or omission, where additional information would provide a better end product. Pelagian relies on its broad knowledge base and the practical expertise of our specialist consultants to identify where design, manufacturing, survey and installation can be improved to the benefit of the project.
Survey
Pelagian has the capability to provide its customers with a full survey solution using well established strategic partnerships with the world’s leading survey companies. We work closely with these companies providing key personnel, project management and permitting expertise.

Management of Unexploded Ordnance
Pelagian’s team of unexploded ordnance (UXO) consultants are world leading experts in the risk assessment and hazard management of UXO and explosive remnants of war (ERW). Our consultants have the relevant military expertise, many having served in active UXO detection and clearance campaigns.
Pelagian’s methodology for assessing UXO risk is based on a process of desk based and in-field risk assessment. All UXO risk assessment work is benchmarked against the appropriate industry standards and includes risk mitigation and cost reduction strategies.
Pelagian’s consultants provide an independent service with no affiliation with any UXO clearance contractors ensuring that the risk assessment and advice given is honest and unbiased
Permitting & Regulations
Pelagian are market leaders in permitting for submarine cable projects. Our consultants offer extensive worldwide knowledge of legal, regulatory, maritime and environmental legislation. We guide you through the permitting process from day one, from the initial concept to the successful installation of your cable system.
Global Permitting Consultancy
Pelagian are acknowledged global experts in marine permitting and provide detailed up to date information on the full range of permits required for a subsea cable project, from Operator’s Licences, Permits in Principle, Environmental requirements through to permits for marine operations.
Pelagian’s consultants investigate and identify all the necessary permits and notifications to fulfil the requirements of government, military and environmental agencies and other maritime stakeholders.
Pelagian has developed a bespoke permit management system for the research, procurement and tracking of permits for the duration of the project lifecycle. The system is GIS based and provides a continually updated matrix utilising a map overview of the cable route, which gives a status report of the permit process for each country based on its established maritime boundary limits.
Management of Seabed Stakeholder Assets
Pelagian are specialists in the management of work around existing seabed infrastructure. We provide a comprehensive stakeholder management service to cable owners, survey companies and cable installers, managing vital geospatial information when crossing or working close to seabed assets such as oil industry pipelines, wind farms and existing subsea cables.
We investigate and identify all the relevant seabed stakeholders, providing them with detailed activity notifications; enabling survey and installation operations to occur over their assets with safety and due diligence.
Pelagian uses a bespoke stakeholder management system for the research and tracking of existing and planned seabed infrastructure for the duration of the project lifecycle. The system is GIS based and utilises live data from oil industry, telecoms, offshore power / renewables and government sources.
Marine Environmental Management
Pelagian provides a comprehensive environmental management solution to its customers when working in the world’s environmentally sensitive areas.
Our specialist marine ecology team provides detailed analysis of marine ecosystems, which includes extensive knowledge of working in Posidonia Seagrass areas. We advise cable owners and installers of safe cable routeing and installation techniques for these fragile habitats.
Pelagian uses a bespoke GIS based management system for the research and mapping of existing and planned protected seabed habitats at both global and national levels, including National Parks, Marine Protected Areas and sensitive coastal regions.
Technology & Tools
Pelagian’s technology solutions draw on decades of hands-on offshore experience. With a proven track record working with all the major submarine cable manufacturers and installers. Pelagian promotes the use of new technology to drive down costs, increase project efficiency, enhance safety and take care of the environment.
Cable Burial Technology
Pelagian has a long track record of operating and deploying seabed burial equipment. When Pelagian was founded, our first projects involved cable laying in rivers and harbors and trenching of array cables in difficult conditions.
The knowledge gained on these early projects enables us to provide expert advice on cable burial technology and when combined with our knowledge of marine surveying, sediments and cable engineering, gives the customer a complete risk mitigation package.
Our independent and practical consultancy services give our customers the confidence to make the right commercial and technical decisions on cable burial technology to achieve their aims for a safe and cost effect cable installation.
